dvd: digital versatile disc
The DVD is an optical disc that can be used for data storage, including high quality movies and sound. DVDs have an average capacity of 4.7 GB and can be found as large as 8.5 GB. This was a huge step up from the CD revolution as it could hold and play 2 hours of high quality video on average. For the same size disc as the CD, the DVD could do everything the CD would and could hold a lot more data! The HD-DVD was released a few years ago however was overtaken once again by the better quality Blu-Ray Disc. DVD players were installed into most computers allowing them to also play high-quality videos on-screen.
